This wine beautifully showcases all the outstanding qualities of the SJR Vineyard: elegance, harmony, finesse, and a compelling sense of place. Like many of Delmas’s predecessors, it satisfies both the intellect and the palate. Patience will be rewarded; this wine should reach a lovely phase of maturity in 7–9 years and will hold for around 15+ years.
Made from 92.5% Syrah and 7.5% Viognier from SJR Vineyard’s estate fruit. Cold soak at 13 °C before fermentation with regular punchdowns 2–3 times daily. Aged sur lie for 17 months in French oak. Bottled unfiltered in an extremely limited release of only 450 bottles.
Color: Deep purple-red hue.
Nose: Complex bouquet of violets, liquorice, and damson plums.
Palate: Blackberry, dried herbs, bacon fat, smouldering incense, and dark chocolate. Richly textured and lively on the palate with well-defined notes of black plum, raspberry, truffle, nutmeg, liquorice, white pepper, and stony minerality. Subtle hints of espresso, sage, and vanilla are also present.
Serving suggestion: We strongly recommend opening Delmas Syrah at least 2–3 hours before enjoying it and decanting if possible.
At the corner of Lower Dry Creek and County Road in Milton-Freewater, in the southwestern corner of The Rocks District, you’ll find SJR Vineyard. Delmas is based in Walla Walla.
In 2007, Mary and Steve Robertson founded SJR Vineyard on ten hectares. A further three hectares were added in 2017. From the start, the Robertsons’ intention has been to create a world-class estate focused on Syrah, Viognier, and Grenache. It is very much a family affair, with direct and active involvement from every family member. Brooke Robertson charts the estate’s course forward and implements cutting-edge viticultural practices. Each row and variety is addressed independently, assessing appropriate training system, pruning severity, and nutrient/irrigation strategies.
