De Trafford Blueprint Syrah – A Masterful Expression from Stellenbosch
De Trafford Blueprint Syrah is an elegant and character-driven red wine from the South African wine region of Stellenbosch. Created by former architect David Trafford, this wine reflects his deep understanding of structure, balance, and detail. The result is a Syrah that masterfully unites intensity with refinement.
Origin and Vinification
The grapes for Blueprint Syrah come primarily from the Keermont vineyard in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley – a high-altitude, cool-climate site with well-drained granite soils. A smaller portion comes from neighboring sites in Helderberg. The cooler conditions and rocky soils result in fruit with great aromatic complexity, fresh acidity, and pronounced minerality.
Harvesting is done by hand, and the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing natural fermentation in small open fermenters. The cap is punched down manually 2–3 times a day, and fermentation lasts around 16 days. The wine is then matured for 20 months in used French oak barrels to preserve the purity of the fruit and express the vineyard’s unique terroir. Bottling is done by hand without fining or filtration.
Tasting Profile
Blueprint Syrah shows a deep ruby-red color. The nose is expressive, offering layers of ripe dark berries – blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry – alongside floral notes, dried herbs, black pepper, and hints of South African fynbos. The palate is juicy and structured, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. A wine that beautifully balances power and elegance with a personal touch.
Food Pairing and Aging
This wine pairs wonderfully with slow-cooked meats, grilled lamb, pulled pork, or umami-rich mushroom dishes. It’s also excellent on its own. While drinking beautifully now, it has aging potential for at least 5–10 years.
