Blandys Vintage Terrantez 1977 is a single harvest madeira. It is made from the extremely rare Terrantez grape and is aged for 38 years in American oak barrels in the traditional “Canteiro” system, where the wine is gradually moved from the upper floors of the warehouse, where it is warmest, to the lower ones, where the temperature drops , until it was bottled in 2015.
Colour: Amber.
Scent: Lively scent full of citrus, peach, tropical fruit and caramel.
Tasting notes: Excellent acidity, in perfect balance with the sweetness. Lots of tropical fruit, almost lightly smoked notes, truffle and marzipan. Long, complex aftertaste.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy it chilled, e.g. with good, hard cheeses.
Whether you’re after a good but affordable bottle or a fancy frasquira from your birth year, Blandy’s is the absolute best bet. It is, quite simply, the island’s top producer!
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 1977 Terrantez, bottled in 2015, is a combination of casks 24213 and 24207. Sadly, it will be one of the last Terrantez releases from Blandy’s, because all the prime vineyard land was given over to hotel construction from the 1980s onward. Chris Blandy reckons there will be three, possibly four more releases down the line. It has a very refined bouquet with dried fig, toffee apple and orange blossom aromas that gently unfold in the glass. After ten minutes, it becomes very smooth and viscous, caressing the palate that Terrantez so often does. Equally beautiful and heartbreaking given that Terrantez is on the cusp of extinction, this is a delightful, refined Madeira suffused with sophistication. Make sure that one is yours.” – 94 points
