Mineral precision and freshness from Priorat’s limestone soils – Coma Calcari is Mas d’en Gil’s white wine with a truly distinctive terroir expression. Made primarily from Garnacha Blanca grown on parcels in the Coma Valley, where the subsoil is unusually rich in limestone, this wine shows remarkable minerality, freshness, and structure that sets it apart from other whites in the region.
The grapes ripen slowly thanks to the cooling influence of the Garbinada wind from the sea, which moderates the hot summer days. The result is a wine where intensity and freshness go hand in hand, allowing the purity of the terroir to shine through.
In the glass, Coma Calcari reveals aromas of citrus, white flowers, green apple, and a subtle chalky minerality. The palate is fresh, precise, and elegant, with lively acidity, great tension, and a long, vibrant finish. It demonstrates how Priorat – renowned for its powerful reds – can also produce whites with almost Burgundian finesse and elegance.
The Producer – Mas d’en Gil
Mas d’en Gil is one of the most respected wineries in Priorat and has been run by the Rovira Carbonell family since 1998. Located in the heart of the Bellmunt Valley, the estate covers 125 hectares, with about 45 under vine. Their philosophy is built on balance, respect for nature, and an honest expression of terroir.
The vineyards combine the region’s signature llicorella slate with unique limestone-rich parcels, allowing for wines that marry power with finesse and complexity. Mas d’en Gil bridges tradition and innovation: organic viticulture, hand harvesting, and gentle ageing practices ensure that the wines remain faithful to the character of the land.
