Aromatic with ripe dark berries, spice and a subtle balsamic touch. The palate is full-bodied yet fresh, with firm, silky-smooth tannins and a long, harmonious finish.
Quinta da Fonte Souto is the Symington family’s first project outside the Douro and is located in Portalegre, a cooler sub-region of Alentejo. The wine is made from grapes grown in the estate’s high-altitude vineyards in the Serra de São Mamede, where granite and slate soils contribute freshness and complexity. The 2020 vintage expresses the estate’s philosophy of combining Alentejo’s power with the elegance of the mountains. The result is a wine with depth, structure and a pronounced minerality that reflects the terroir’s unique character.
The wine is produced from a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Trincadeira, Aragonês, Alfrocheiro and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, a large part of the wine is aged in French oak barrels for around 12 months to build complexity and structure.
About Quinta da Fonte Souto
Quinta da Fonte Souto is the Symington family’s first estate outside the Douro region. You may have heard of Symington elsewhere, as the family also owns the renowned Port producer Graham’s. At Quinta da Fonte Souto, however, the focus is on classic still wines. The winery is located in Portalegre, close to the São Mamede mountain range, which benefits the vines with a cooler climate than you would normally expect in a region known for very hot weather.
The estate comprises 43 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Aragonês, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The property is also home to a number of chestnut trees, which inspired the name—“souto” refers to a wooded area planted with chestnut trees.
