Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse 10 cl. 69%

French Herb Spirit

Chartreuse Elixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse is the most concentrated and original expression in the Chartreuse family – a powerful French herbal elixir made by the Carthusian monks who also produce the classic green and yellow Chartreuse liqueurs. The history of the recipe goes back to 1605, when the monks received a manuscript containing the formula for an “elixir of long life,” and after more than 150 years of work, the final version was established in 1764.

The product is made from 130 plants and, according to the producer, contains alcohol, sugar, water, and vegetal substances. It is bottled at a striking 69% ABV in a small 100 ml bottle, presented in a wooden case to protect it from light and ensure optimal storage.

The style is highly intense, concentrated, and distinctly herbal. The producer presents the elixir as a historical tonic with strong vegetal tones, and that is exactly what makes it so special: this is not an ordinary liqueur meant for generous pours, but an aromatic concentrate with great complexity and a clear apothecary character. The fact that it is the original product behind the later Chartreuse liqueurs can be felt in its depth, strength, and botanical precision.

It is best used in very small quantities. Chartreuse recommends a few drops or a teaspoon in herbal tea or tisane, ideally with a little honey and lemon, but the elixir is also used in cocktails and cooking when a powerful herbal aromatic lift is desired. It is therefore primarily a bottle for those who appreciate classic elixirs, digestifs, and intense botanical complexity rather than a soft sipping liqueur.
