Marolo Grappa di Barolo 2010 14 Years “Mizunara” is an exclusive, long-aged grappa from Piedmont, made from the pomace of Nebbiolo grapes from the 2010 Barolo vintage. This vintage is known for its elegance, structure, and excellent ageing potential. The result is a grappa with a clear sense of origin, remarkable complexity, and a distinctive style where Italian tradition meets Japanese oak culture.
Taste and aroma:
The colour is light amber. On the nose, it is layered and refined, with fruity and spicy notes from the long ageing in European oak, followed by clear Mizunara oak character: incense, sandalwood, sweet spices, and exotic resinous nuances. Additional notes of coconut, dried fruit, citrus peel, and balsamic freshness add further depth. On the palate, it is full-bodied, warm, and precise, with a long finish and a complex yet balanced aromatic profile.
Production:
This grappa is distilled from Nebbiolo pomace from the 2010 Barolo harvest. Marolo uses discontinuous bain-marie distillation in small batches, a slow and gentle method that preserves the aromatic character of the raw material. After distillation, the grappa is aged for eleven years in European oak casks, many of which previously held Marsala. It is then matured for a further three years in rare Japanese Mizunara oak, a wood known for imparting especially complex and distinctive aromas.
Producer:
The producer is Distilleria Santa Teresa dei Fratelli Marolo s.r.l. in Alba, Piedmont. Founded in 1977 by Paolo Marolo and his brother, the distillery is known for its artisanal approach to grappa, its focus on varietal expression, and its use of extended ageing and different types of wood to highlight terroir and grape character.
Key information:
The product is bottled at 48% ABV, comes in a 70 cl bottle, and is released in a limited edition of 1,980 individually numbered bottles. The label was created by Japanese artist Hakuyu Watanabe, and the bottle is presented in a specially designed gift box.
