A.A Badenhorst Secateurs Vintage Red Blend 2024 75 cl.
Wine of South Africa
A.A. Badenhorst Secateurs Red is a juicy, characterful red wine from Swartland in South Africa, created by cult producer A.A. Badenhorst. The Secateurs range is meant to be the estate’s “everyday and weekend” wines – high quality, lots of personality, yet easy to drink and easy to pair with food.
The wine is made mainly from classic Rhône varieties such as Cinsault, Shiraz and Grenache (the proportions vary slightly from vintage to vintage), mostly from old bush vines that give low yields and intense fruit. Fermentation is gentle, often with a share of whole clusters, and ageing takes place mostly in larger, used barrels so that the oak does not dominate the fruit.
Style and flavour profile
Appearance: Clear ruby red with a bright, lively colour.
Nose: Fresh and spicy, with red and dark berries (cherry, raspberry, blackberry), dried herbs, white pepper, violets and a hint of liquorice and Mediterranean herbs.
Palate: Medium-bodied and juicy, with ripe red fruit, blackberry, cherry, fine spice, a touch of pepper, herbs and a slight earthy note. The tannins are ripe and soft, and the acidity is fresh, so the wine feels both full and vibrant at the same time.
Finish: Medium length with lingering berry fruit, herbal notes and a light, dry structure that makes it very food-friendly.
Food and serving suggestions Secateurs Red is very versatile and works both as a relaxed “drinking wine” and at the dinner table:
Perfect with grilled meats (chicken, pork, lamb), burgers, pizza and pasta with tomato or ragù.
Excellent with rustic dishes such as stews, charcuterie and tapas with spicy sausage, olives and hard cheeses.
Serve at about 15–17 °C – slightly cool for a red – to keep the freshness and spice at their best.
A straightforward yet far from boring red wine that combines sun-ripened South African fruit with European-style freshness and structure – just open, pour and enjoy.
