Planteray Rum – Barbados Aged 5 Years 70 cl. 40%

Artisanal Rum – Product of Barbados

Planteray Rum (formerly Plantation) is the rum house linked to Maison Ferrand in Cognac. They operate as a modern rum house rather than a single distillery: partnering with producers across multiple rum regions, selecting distillates and casks, and shaping a house style through blending and a strong focus on maturation—often via “double ageing,” with a second stage in France for added smoothness and complexity.

Planteray Barbados Aged 5 Years is their Barbados classic: clearly cask-influenced, yet smooth and approachable. It’s typically bottled at 40% ABV and built as a blend of pot-still and column-still rums from Barbados. The signature is the maturation: first aged in the tropical climate on the island (commonly in ex-bourbon barrels), then finished/aged further in France in Ferrand (ex-cognac) casks, adding a creamy roundness and a refined spice note.

In the glass it’s warm and rounded, often showing vanilla, caramel, and honey, with hints of baked banana/tropical fruit, a touch of citrus peel, and gentle oak spice that can lean toward nutmeg, cinnamon, and espresso/coffee on the finish. Overall it reads “Barbados-smooth” rather than funky, which is why it’s so versatile.

Serving and use

  • Neat or on ice: an easy sipper, especially if you enjoy vanilla and caramel tones.

  • In cocktails: excellent in a rounder-style Daiquiri, a Rum Old Fashioned, Rum Sour, and elegant highballs.

  • As an all-rounder: a reliable upgrade in classics and a great house rum at home.
