For me, Pinot Noir is at its most fascinating when it is allowed to be both fine-boned and expressive at the same time. It is a grape that does not shout the loudest in the glass, yet in the right hands it can deliver an almost unmatched combination of elegance, energy, texture, and depth. With Pinot Noir Cuvée Prestige, I want to capture exactly that feeling: a case for those who appreciate Pinot Noir with a little more precision, a little more sense of origin, and a little more craftsmanship in every bottle. Here, classic Burgundy, cool-climate New World, and alpine finesse come together in a collection of wines that feel carefully selected rather than simply picked.
What does Pinot Noir Cuvée Prestige mean?
In this context, I use it as a premium-minded title for Pinot Noir wines with an extra level of selection, personality, and quality. Pinot Noir is the grape, cuvée signals a deliberate selection or composition with a clear idea behind it, and prestige tells you that this is the more ambitious and refined expression of the case. In other words, this is not just Pinot Noir as an everyday red, but Pinot Noir with greater depth, clearer identity, and stronger gastronomic or cellaring potential.
This is a wine with both elegance and backbone, where ripe cherry fruit, maraschino notes, and fine spice meet a distinct tannic grip and a very long finish. The style is classic without being austere, offering both depth and energy, which makes it especially well suited to game, roasted meat dishes, and aged, flavourful cheeses. The grapes come from Girlan’s best-suited and oldest vineyard sites in Bassa Atesina and Oltradige, are harvested by hand, and fermented in stainless steel, with a small proportion of whole bunches included. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged first for 12 months in barriques and small oak casks, then for 8 months in large oak casks, and finally for 8 months in bottle.
One of the most polished and terroir-driven wines in the case, with a cool and nuanced nose of wild strawberries, raspberries, orange peel, roses, and sweet spice. On the palate, there is bright red fruit, pomegranate, a light umami note, fine minerality, and a firm, dry structure that gives both tension and length. This is Pinot Noir for those who favour finesse over weight, and it pairs beautifully with duck, veal, mushroom dishes, poultry, and more refined white meat dishes. The wine comes from a single premium vineyard in Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, planted at high density with Dijon clones. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in stainless steel, with 60 percent whole bunches and 40 percent whole berries, before the wine is aged for 11 months in oak, 25 percent of which is new.
Here you get a Burgundy with charm, classic Pinot fruit, and an extra layer of depth from old vines. The palate moves through cherry, raspberry, darker berry notes, and a discreet peppery spice, supported by fresh acidity and a harmonious, elegant structure that makes the wine very versatile at the table. I would especially pair it with duck, chicken, veal, mushrooms, or rustic dishes where you want a red wine with both lightness and substance. The wine is made from Pinot Noir sourced from two different parcels, with the main part coming from the south-facing Les Saulniers, where the vines are between 20 and 70 years old. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted three times, destemmed, and cold-macerated for 5 to 7 days before fermentation. The wine then matures for 10 months in French oak, around 25 percent new, before resting in stainless steel and being bottled unfiltered.
This is a more serious and structured Burgundy, with Premier Cru character reflected in both depth and precision. The nose opens with cherry, raspberry, roses, peony, and spice, while the palate is savoury, generous, and long, with soft yet clearly defined tannins. It is particularly well suited to roast duck, veal, classic meat dishes with sauce, and medium-intensity cheeses. The grapes come from Clos Rousseau in Santenay, where the soils are made up of hard limestone. The harvest is done by hand, the grapes are sorted on arrival at the cellar, and the wine undergoes a fermentative maceration in temperature-controlled wooden vats for 3 to 4 weeks. It is then aged for 14 to 16 months in oak barrels, 20 to 30 percent of which are new.
A charming and very well-made Oregon wine with a clear cool-climate feel, where cherry, blackberry compote, forest berries, mushroom, and a light herbal note come together in a soft yet complex whole. It is generous without becoming heavy, and its fine balance makes it an excellent match for duck with cherries, lamb chops, mushroom dishes, and vegetable dishes with roasted or earthy flavours. The fruit is sourced from several carefully selected vineyard sites in Oregon to create a fruity yet classic style. The producer works with gentle fermentation to preserve the grape’s soft expression, and the wine is then matured in French oak to add structure, texture, and harmony.
A wine with a clear Martinborough signature, where pure red fruit is joined by lifted spice, a light herbal edge, and a more savoury, layered depth. The palate leans toward raspberry, tart red cherry, and redcurrant, with fine spice and soft, supple tannins that give the wine an elegant yet clearly defined finish. This is an excellent wine for duck, poultry, mushroom dishes, pork, and dishes where you want Pinot Noir with a little more structure and earthy complexity. The grapes come from the Kiwa vineyard on Te Muna Road in Martinborough, where deep alluvial gravel soils contribute texture and concentration. The fruit is destemmed into open-top fermenters with a small proportion of whole bunches, fermented with natural yeasts, and gently hand-plunged once daily during 27 days of skin contact. The wine is then aged for 20 months in French barriques, 40 percent of which are new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
