A rare insight into the impact of Bajan terroir, the Single Estate 2023 Edition is Mount Gay’s first rum to be produced entirely from sugar cane grown on the Mount Gay estate. A mix of sugar cane harvested in 2016 and 2017, the resulting molasses was fermented using a strain of yeast unique to the distillery, distilled, and then matured in Barbados. Floral and fruity, with notes of burnt sugar, manuka honey and fusty funky characters on the nose, with the palate driving far more of the raw material characteristics, presenting a plethora of floral notes with tropical and stone fruits. Complex and utterly intriguing, a great start to what will no doubt be a fascinating series.
A thrilling inclusion in the Mount Gay portfolio, this release marks the inception of an annual series from the Barbados distillery. The inaugural Single Estate rum was crafted exclusively from sugar cane cultivated on the Mount Gay estate in Barbados, with a deliberate focus on molasses production for rum. The 2023 edition is a blend of the 2016 and 2017 cane harvests, undergoing fermentation with a yeast strain exclusive to Mount Gay. The resulting rum was patiently aged for six to seven years, and only 4,002 numbered bottles were produced.
