THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION 36 YEAR OLD
With only 400 bottles available worldwide, Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer could hardly contain his excitement at getting to taste The Archive Collection for the first time. This first release is a striking and refined tasting experience, with its sherry seasoning making for a hearty, rich depth of flavour.
Whiskies of this age tend to go through a ‘change curve of flavours’ – meaning a full spectrum of flavours getting their turn in the spotlight. First the classic peat smoke we all know and love, then the tropical fruity flavours, then back round to peat. As Barry says, peat smoke is “a very stubborn flavour – it never goes away, it just retires slightly”.
NTRIGUING, UNUSUAL, UNMISTAKABLY LAPHROAIG
The Archive Collection is a series of aged whiskies that pays homage to the commitment and craft of our master distillers and our endeavour to create remarkable whiskies.
The Archive Collection 36 Year Old is the first release and uniquely showcases our single malt’s extraordinary depth and character. A truly rare, cask strength whisky promising a broad spectrum of flavours and aromas, this single malt brings a new dimension to the unmistakable flavour of Laphroaig and is certainly one to treasure.
Full-flavoured and peaty with a salty edge, The Archive Collection 36 Year Old has been shaped and rounded over decades, just like the green Islay sea glass that inspired the bottle’s sculpted curves and textured neck.
The unique green glass bottle is hand-blown and artistically laser etched with no printed labels, making for a one-of-a-kind collector’s item.
The surprising fruity flavour beneath our signature, peaty style is perfectly balanced from maturing first in ex-bourbon American oak casks, then resting in a second fill Oloroso hogshead. This sherry seasoning adds layers of subtlety, complexity and depth to a classically Laphroaig taste.
The Archive Collection 36 Year Old is a testament to our master distillers’ skills in ensuring that the peat and smokiness of a 36-year-old single malt is preserved and enhanced by age.
