Laphroaig 18 Years is a single malt whisky from the world-renowned Laphroaig Distillery on Islay, an island often regarded as the very heart of smoky Scotch whisky. This 18-year-old expression reveals a more mature and sophisticated side of Laphroaig, where the powerful peat smoke is refined and balanced with depth and elegance after nearly two decades in oak casks.
Matured for at least 18 years in carefully selected casks, it has allowed the distinctive smoky and medicinal character to mellow and integrate with layers of fruit, vanilla, and spice. It retains the iconic personality that made Laphroaig famous worldwide, yet with a roundness and harmony that only long maturation can provide.
Nose
Rich and complex with peat smoke, sea salt, and mineral notes. Hints of green apple, citrus, vanilla, and caramelised oak mingle with tobacco, leather, and spice.
Palate
Powerful yet rounded. The signature Laphroaig smoke is prominent but more refined, balanced with sweet notes of honey, orange peel, malt, and oak. White pepper and subtle herbs add further complexity, while the medicinal iodine character is gentler than in younger expressions.
Finish
Long, deep, and elegant. Lingering peat smoke, malt, and maritime notes combine with vanilla and oak spice in a warm, enduring conclusion.
The Laphroaig Distillery
Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston and today stands as one of the most legendary distilleries on Islay. Situated on the island’s southern coast, it takes its name from the nearby bay – Lag Bhròthaig, meaning “the broad bay” in Gaelic.
Laphroaig has always been renowned for its distinctive style, where the peat smoke is intense and often described as “medicinal,” with notes of iodine, seaweed, and salty ocean air. A crucial element of this unique flavour comes from the peat found on Islay, rich in marine vegetation, which sets it apart from peat sourced elsewhere in Scotland.
The distillery is also one of the few that still operates its own floor maltings, where part of the barley is traditionally malted by hand. This craftsmanship, together with the coastal maturation climate and the use of both bourbon and sherry casks, has established Laphroaig as an icon among Islay whiskies.
During the 20th century, Laphroaig gained special recognition in the United States when President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared it his whisky of choice. Today, the distillery holds cult status among whisky enthusiasts, proudly upholding its motto: “The most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies.”
