Hazelburn 8 Years Oloroso Cask Matured 2025 Edition is a highly anticipated release from the Springbank distillery in Campbeltown, and part of the well-known ”Sherry Wood” series. This edition was distilled in February 2017 and bottled in March 2025, with a total production of just 10,500 bottles. As always with Hazelburn, the whisky is triple-distilled, entirely unpeated, and bottled at natural colour without chill-filtration. It is released at 48.2%, offering both strength and finesse.
Matured exclusively in oloroso sherry casks, the influence is evident throughout both nose and palate. In the glass, it opens with a warm, spicy aroma of cinnamon that gradually develops into notes of cocoa powder, cranberries and redcurrants. Beneath the surface are hints of raisins and dark chocolate, reminiscent of classic sherried whiskies with depth and weight.
On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and fruity. An explosion of mixed berries, strawberry candy and sticky toffee pudding takes centre stage, joined by ripe blackberries and a subtle vinous sweetness from the casks. The texture is oily and rounded, making the whisky generous yet balanced. The sherry influence is pronounced without being overwhelming, creating a harmonious interplay of fruit, sweetness and spice.
The finish is long, complex and elegant. It begins with nutty notes of hazelnut and walnut, followed by a gentle dryness reminiscent of oak and clove. The overall impression is a whisky that delivers both depth and intensity, yet with a refined balance that makes it approachable for anyone who enjoys sherry-matured whisky.
