Hampden Estate – 12 Years 2010 HLCF Rare Cask #78 is a Jamaican Pure Single Rum from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, one of Jamaica’s most iconic rum distilleries. Hampden was founded in 1753 and is known for its heavy, aromatic pot still rums with a very distinctive ester-driven character. This particular bottling forms part of the distillery’s Rare Cask Series, a set of five single casks distilled in 2010 and matured for 12 years in Jamaica’s tropical climate.
This release comes from cask number 78, an ex-bourbon cask, distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2022 at 61.9% ABV in a 700 ml format. It belongs to the HLCF mark, which at Hampden stands for Hampden Light Continental Flavoured. HLCF represents a style of high aromatic intensity, though not the most extreme level found in the distillery’s range.
In flavour, this is a rum that combines Hampden’s typical funk and oxidative character with an unusual degree of roundness from age. The profile moves through lime, macerated fruit, black pepper, peach, roasted pineapple, grapefruit, coconut, and vanilla, while the finish becomes long and intense with notes of liquorice, chocolate, tobacco, banana, and mango. The overall impression is rich, exotic, and unmistakably Hampden in style, yet also more integrated and textural than younger, rawer high-ester rums.
This is above all a rum to enjoy neat, ideally with plenty of time in the glass. Its high strength and complex ester profile make it especially well suited to drinkers who appreciate Jamaican rum with plenty of character, where tropical fruit, solvent-like notes, spice, liquorice, and oak come together in a more mature and concentrated expression.
