Gelas Armagnac VS is a young Armagnac from Maison Gelas. The designation VS (Very Special), which can also be indicated with three stars, is the youngest age designation in Armagnac and means that it has been aged for at least 2 years – although it can also be older. These Armagnacs are typically very lively and fruity on the nose, of which this VS from Gelas is a good example.
Colour: Light golden.
Aroma: Energetic, fruity aroma with notes of black pepper, plums, apples and pears.
Tasting notes: The taste spreads a warm sensation of vanilla, cloves and prunes.
Serving suggestions: Can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails.
Maison Gelas was founded in 1865 and for more than four generations has distilled and aged Armagnac under the family’s own name. The company is located in Bas Armagnac, which is the smallest of Armagnac’s three districts. Here, the soil has a very special character, which provides the best growing conditions in the vineyards.
Maison Gelas offers a wide range of Armagnacs. The family grows the grapes themselves, distills the spirits as well as stores and bottles their Armagnacs and therefore has control over the quality of the product from start to finish. Of the family’s many special specialties, e.g. mentions a number of exceptional “monocépage” or “single grape” Armagnacs – i.e. a number of “pure” and unmixed Armagnacs, where the difference in aroma and flavor impression is really prominent. These are of course bottled at cask strength and without filtration. In addition, Maison Gelas, superior to most other Armagnac producers, offers more than 90 different vintage Armagnacs – all the way back to 1887.
Since 2001, Philippe Gelas has managed and developed the family’s extensive range. Philippe is also the author of a great book about Armagnac and there is hardly a person more knowledgeable about the history of the area and the production of Armagnac.
