“Treixadura” from Finca Viñoa is composed of 90% Treixadura, 5% Albariño, 3% Godello and 2% Loureira from the property’s 12 ha. vineyards, laid out in terraces (180-350 m.a.s.l.) near the village of Banga in the Avia valley. The Treixadura grape variety is very classic in the area and has had a real renaissance in recent years. As the main grape in this wine, it shows the quality potential it has when vinified by a skilled cellar master like José Manuel Martínez Juste.
The bunches are hand-picked in small boxes of 15 kg, which are immediately transported to the cellar, where they stay in a cold room (5ºC) before they are sorted and de-stalked. The whole grapes then undergo a skin maceration for 2 hours, followed by a gentle pressing. The must goes through a natural fermentation in steel tanks and a maturation for 6 months “on lees”, also in steel tanks. The wine is bottled after natural sedimentation.
The wine has a glossy, light golden color with a greenish tinge. The scent is very deep and complex with nuances of citrus fruits, peaches, yellow plums and Japanese medlar as well as more ethereal notes of mint, anise and licorice. At first the wine seems light and fresh, with delicate notes of citronella, Moroccan mint and citrus fruits, but then it develops bolder nuances of peppermint, sage, peaches and papaya. It ends with good crispness and balance between the dry and the exotic notes. A fantastically complex and characterful white wine!
Serve it with seafood such as spiny lobster, freshly peeled prawns, oysters or roe, dishes with steamed or grilled fish, but also with pasta dishes, poultry and warm vegetable dishes and with goat’s cheese.
It is the company Grandes Pagos Gallegos in Galicia, which is behind the operation of the wineries Quinta de Couselo in DO Rías Baixas and Finca Viñoa / Pazo Casanova in DO Ribeiro. The company’s skilled team of agronomists and oenologists supervise the production of the two houses (and also at Bodega Fragas do Lecer in DO Monterrei), and they guarantee a stable and high quality of the wines.
FINCA VIÑOA, Ribeiro
Finca Viñao is owned by Bodega y Viñedos Pazo de Casanova and the magnificent property with its beautiful terraces is located in the Valle del Avia valley in DO Ribeiro in northwestern Spain. It was in their search for some of the original (and often abandoned) vineyards that in 2003 José Manuel Martínez Juste and his friend Manuel Giraldez Campos found and bought the property, A Viñoa, near the village of Gomariz. At the foot of the winery itself lay 8 ha. vineyards laid out in terraces, and with some vines that were 100 years old. The place was named Finca Viñoa.
Subsequently, 7 ha became neighboring parcels purchased. They were, however, overgrown with trees and undergrowth, but after clearing it turned out to hide old, traditional “socalcos” terraces with stone walls, which had previously been used for viticulture. Today, the property consists of a total of 12 ha. vineyards, planted exclusively with local white grape varieties such as Treixadura, Godello, Albariño and Loureira. Approx. 70 terraces extend at a height of 185 to 330 m.a.s.l. and on 3 mountain sides, which face respectively to the southwest, south and southeast. The subsoil consists of slate, crumbling granite (sábrego) and clay. All parcels lie within the demarcated area, Ribeiro del Avia, which has always been known for producing the best and most durable white wines in the district.
