Fanø Skibsrom – Gunpowder 50 cl. 57%

Gunpowder 57 is Gunpowder Proof. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the English navy used the ‘Gunpowder Proof test’ to determine the amount of alcohol in the ship’s rum ration.

A small mixture of gunpowder and rum was made, and if it flared up on ignition it was 57% or more and therefore Gunpowder Proof.

In addition to ensuring that you did not pay an overcharge for watered-down rum, it also meant that the ship’s gunpowder was not destroyed in the event of leaking rum barrels.

GUNPOWDER 57 is based on a rum that is distilled in Jamaica and subsequently refined on Fanø. The processing consists of a two-stage storage. First, the rum is stored together with natural raw materials such as Fanø Heather honey, sea buckthorn and Madagascar vanilla. It is then stored in port casks.

GUNPOWDER 57 has won a bronze medal in the International Wine & Spirit competition 2020.
