Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2023 75 cl.

Toscana Rosso – Italy

For Borgo Scopeto’s Chianti Classico, the estate uses Sangiovese (90%), plus Colorino and Merlot from different parcels on the property (360–450 metres above sea level). After ten days of alcoholic fermentation, followed by a classic, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured for 12 months in 30 hl Slavonian oak casks. It is then aged for a minimum of 2 months before shipment from the estate.

Borgo Scopeto shows a deep, brilliant red colour. On the nose, it offers a rich and intense aroma of wild dark berries, with nuances of chocolate and a fine touch of vanilla from the oak ageing. The palate is a study in harmony and elegance, and it is also a wine that can develop positively over the next 5–7 years. It has generous body, a fine fruit sweetness and soft tannins, finishing with a seductive, long and persistent aftertaste.

The wine is a suitable companion to most meat dishes, but is especially well suited to pasta or rice dishes, as well as cheeses that are not overly mature.

The Borgo Scopeto estate near Castelnuovo Berardenga, a few kilometres from Siena, was founded in the year 1000 and was then part of the agricultural holdings of the Bishop of Siena. The estate’s impressive tower was built in the 13th century and formed part of a larger defensive structure. In the early 14th century, the Church gifted the estate to one of Siena’s most influential families, the Sozzini, who retained it for more than five centuries.

Under the new owners, Borgo Scopeto quickly became a meeting place for humanists, artists and poets—often accused of heresy and fleeing the Church. Much of this history can be explored today when enjoying the excellent hotel facilities the property now offers.

Since 1998, Borgo Scopeto has been owned and operated by one of the most recognised Brunello producers, Caparzo. The estate covers 493 hectares at an altitude of 350–400 metres above sea level, but only 37 hectares are planted with vines—naturally on the best-suited parcels with soils of limestone, sandstone and marl. Of these, 30 hectares are planted with Sangiovese, 3 hectares with Cabernet and Syrah, and 4 hectares with Chardonnay.
