This family producer based in Verduno has used grapes from their own vineyards near the small village in the northernmost part of the appellation, where the wines are elegant and highly aromatic without lacking intensity.
In 2020, they skillfully adapted to the vintage’s conditions, avoiding excessive thinning of clusters and maintaining more leaf coverage. These decisions led to a long growing season, with the Nebbiolo harvest starting in October—just a week earlier than in the 2019 vintage.
Barolo del Comune di Verduno was fermented in stainless steel tanks, with very gentle pump-overs to avoid harsh aromas. It was aged for three years in 2,500-liter Slavonian oak casks.
The choices made both in the vineyard and the cellar have given Alessandria’s Barolos an elegance that 95% of other Barolos lack in the 2020 vintage. These wines are not particularly structured or among the most powerful, but that is not always what’s needed.
Barolo is essentially about the symbiosis between the Nebbiolo grape and the complex aging aromas it develops through time in barrel and bottle. Winemaker Vittore Alessandria masters this balance.
The nose offers an ethereal, complex drinking experience with cherry, dried roses, pipe tobacco, a slight balsamic note, and just the right amount of bright acidity that stimulates the senses and adds complexity to the whole. This is a floating yet intense Barolo with a distinctly confident style and a persistent finish that far exceeds its price.
