Finca Valpiedra is one of the most prestigious estates in Rioja and the only one in the region to work with a concept inspired by Bordeaux’s Grand Cru. The 2018 vintage is made from Tempranillo with small proportions of Graciano and Maturana Tinta, harvested from the estate’s own vineyards by the Ebro River. The wine expresses the site’s unique character, with stony soils that contribute a pronounced minerality. After a cool growing season with excellent ripening, this Reserva shows balance, depth and classic Rioja elegance, where fruit, oak and structure merge in harmony.
A complex nose of ripe black berries, vanilla, tobacco and spice. The palate is full-bodied, silky and persistent, with fine tannins and an elegant, spicy oak influence.
The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by 22 months of ageing in French and American oak barrels. The wine then matures further in bottle before release, ensuring complexity and ageing potential.
About Finca Valpiedra
Finca Valpiedra is a “spin-off” from the well-known Rioja house Bodegas Valdemar, widely recognized for producing wines of superb quality at affordable prices. Due to its great success, Finca Valpiedra—together with Finca Antigua in La Mancha and Cosecheros y Criadores in Tierra de Castilla—was separated from the original Bodegas Valdemar, and the three now form the winery group Familia Martínez Bujanda.
Finca Valpiedra—the estate with the stony vineyard—was built as a truly unique, state-of-the-art bodega in 1991 by the Martínez Bujanda family in the exclusive Rioja Alta, just 20 metres from the Ebro River. Grapes for this single-vineyard wine are grown on 80 hectares of vineyards with sandy and limestone soils, in a climate with ideal rainfall and sunshine. Harvesting is carried out in several passes to ensure perfectly ripe grapes, and the results are outstanding.
