Girovago Primitivo di Manduria is a bold and expressive red from southern Italy, made from the primitivo grape – the variety that has almost single-handedly built the reputation of the Puglia region among wine lovers across northern Europe. Puglia and primitivo have long been faithful sources of generous, fruit-driven wines full of energy, crafted in a friendly and accessible style that suits northern palates and climates alike.
Manduria is considered the heartland of Italy’s finest primitivo wines. This DOP-designated appellation lies on the “inner heel” of Italy’s boot, just east of Taranto, stretching some 20 kilometres along the Ionian coast. The poor soils, constant winds, and the proximity to the sea produce hardy, weathered vines that yield small, flavour-packed grapes. The maritime influence tempers the hot, dry climate, allowing the wines to combine richness and finesse.
Behind the wine’s deep, dark colour unfolds aromas and flavours of ripe blackberries, sweet mulberries, blueberries, and prunes, with a hint of freshly roasted espresso. The fruit is opulent and mature, with a concentration that belongs to wines of a far higher price point.
This is a full-bodied and powerful wine that still manages to show a touch of elegance. Its structure is round and inviting, making it a pleasure to drink.
Enjoy Girovago Primitivo di Manduria alongside hearty dishes such as slow-cooked stews, grilled meats, or roasted fare. It is delicious to drink now but will also age gracefully for a few years. Serve at 15–17 °C.
