Heavily peated malt + long maturation… what’s not to like!?
This 18-year-old bottling from Tobermory Distillery offers a whisky primarily matured in ex-bourbon barrels before receiving a finish in used sherry casks.
Bottled at CVH’s iconic 46.3% and, as always: natural colour and non-chill filtered.
Nose
Heavily fruited and smoky malt. Well-balanced between the phenols (smoke), maritime character, and sweetness from the oak casks.
Palate
Full-bodied, powerful, and sherry-driven. Herbal smoke, caramel with sea salt and orange peel. Old tobacco and freshly ground white pepper.
Finish
Relatively long with even more pleasant smoke and sherry, plus dense notes of liquorice and a hint of sea mist.
Comment
It’s no coincidence that this very whisky won “Whisky of the Year” in 2023 at the renowned The Whisky Exchange.
About Tobermory/Ledaig
Tobermory is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries and the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. Founded back in 1798, it was originally named Ledaig. Since then the distillery has seen major ups and downs, including a complete closure between 1930 and 1972 and several changes of ownership. Fortunately, since 1993 things have been quite stable at the distillery, and today it is highly regarded among whisky enthusiasts.
