“Drinking Nelson’s Blood”
One of the stories tells that Admiral Nelson, who died in the Caribbean, is put in a barrel of rum to last him all the way home, where he can have a grand funeral in Trefalger Square.
On board the ships, sailors did everything to get hold of the good rum. They often went on night trips, where they made holes in barrels and found a small stopper, so that they could fetch rum night after night … However, no one knew in which barrel Nelsons was put, so on arrival in London, bar no better than that Nelson’s cask was empty of rum, only the body remained!
That way, sailors had “Drunk Nelson’s Blood” all the way home!
