Meikle Tòir – pronounced Mee-kuhl Tohr – means “great pursuit” in Scottish Gaelic and reflects the ambition behind the whisky: to create powerful, peated Speyside single malt with depth and character. The brand is produced by The GlenAllachie Distillery, founded in 1967 in the heart of Speyside. Under the leadership of Master Distiller Billy Walker, the distillery has become renowned for rich, complex releases. With Meikle Tòir, GlenAllachie takes a bold step into peated whisky, something rarely seen in Speyside.
About the whisky
The Turbo is a heavily peated single malt, measuring around 70 PPM, which gives it an intense smoky profile. Matured for five years in a mix of American virgin oak casks and Oloroso sherry hogsheads, the whisky combines sweetness, spice, and depth. Bottled at 50% ABV, with no chill filtration and no added color, it offers a natural and powerful character.
Flavor profile
On the nose, there are notes of smoked blood orange, manuka honey, cinnamon spice, dark chocolate, and roasted hazelnuts. The palate reveals leather, baking spices, and cigar box, followed by honey, dried red fruits, and a touch of salted caramel. The finish is long and robust, with burnt orange peel, toasted oak, and lingering peat smoke.
Why “The Turbo”?
This expression is called The Turbo because it represents the most intensely peated whisky in the Meikle Tòir series. The high phenol content (around 70 PPM) and bold flavor profile give it a “turbocharged” character – full-throttle smoke and power.
Special characteristics
The peat used comes from mainland Scotland (St. Fergus, Aberdeenshire), giving a sweeter, richer smoke compared to the maritime style of Islay. GlenAllachie also employs an extended fermentation time of up to 160 hours, creating greater complexity and layers of flavor.
