La Gauloise Liqueur Bicentenaire Jaune 70 cl. 40%

French Herb Liqueur

The old herbal elixir La Gauloise is also available in a yellow version, which is slightly sweeter and milder. Like its green relative, it is made at the Distillerie du Center in Limoges, which was founded in the 1780s. However, the recipe is much older and was forgotten for a long time, but it saw the light of day again when Edouard Requier came across it in an old grimoire.

The taste is honeyed, sweet and mildly spicy.

Colour: Bright yellow.
Scent: Mild notes of honey, vanilla and warm spices.
Tasting notes: Syrupy and creamy with caramelized notes, honey and flowers.

Serving suggestion: Enjoy it plain as an avec – possibly over ice – or try it in cocktails.

Legend has it that this liqueur was already a popular elixir when France was part of Gaul, hence the name La Gauloise. In fact, the liqueur is said to have been the favorite drink of Roman legionnaires, but unfortunately the recipe was lost until the spiritually gifted alchemist Edouard Requier came across the recipe in 1783 in an old book of spells. He tried the recipe and La Gauloise was reborn. The recipe is – of course – secret, but we do know that it is distilled over an open fire with, among other things, quark, saffron, cardamom and St. John’s wort, added brandy and flavored with sugar.
