Kilkerran 8 Years Cask Strength Sherry Cask 58.1% is the 2022 cask strength sherry release from Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown. Lightly peated, double distilled and matured for eight years exclusively in Oloroso sherry casks, it is bottled at its natural cask strength of 58.1%, with no chill filtration and no added colour – a raw, honest expression of both spirit and sherry cask.
Producer and style
Glengyle Distillery, home of Kilkerran, is owned by the same family company as Springbank and sits in the heart of the historic whisky town of Campbeltown. The house style is marked by gentle peat smoke, an oily mouthfeel, maritime notes and a touch of “Campbeltown funk” – earthiness, workshop grease, old timber and a slightly rough edge that many enthusiasts adore.
In this particular 2022, 58.1% release, that character is amplified by very active sherry maturation: deep fruit, dark sweetness and spicy, structured oak.
Nose
The nose opens surprisingly bright, with aromatic citrus – orange peel, marmalade and a hint of lemon zest – before it dives into heavier sherry tones. Toffee, fudge, dark chocolate and soft caramel follow, together with raspberries, figs and other red and dried fruits. In the background you find almonds, mixed nuts, earthy peat smoke, leather, dried tobacco, milk chocolate and a touch of cinnamon and black pepper.
Palate
On the palate, the whisky is rich, powerful and oily, with obvious cask strength but very good balance.

First a wave of sweetness and umami: honey, demerara sugar, syrup, fudge and flavours reminiscent of sticky glaze on grilled meats – clearly tied to the peat smoke.

Then deep sherry fruit: cherry syrup, dark berries, dried figs and dates, spicy biscuits and Christmas cake.

Smoke and structure show as earthy, understated peat smoke, charcoal, burnt toast, cocoa, oak spice, a faint rubber note and pronounced “farmyard” elements: barnyard, soil, old wood.
A few drops of water really open it up: more red fruit, softer chocolate notes, a clearer nuttiness and more pronounced citrus.
Finish
The finish is medium to long, warm and multi-layered. Sherry sweetness, dried cherries, caramel and pralines linger alongside roasted nuts, tobacco, soot, glowing embers and spices like ginger, cinnamon and black pepper. Toward the end, a distinct note of chocolate orange and slightly dry oak appears, keeping the sweetness in check.
Serving and character
This Kilkerran is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped glass, after 10–15 minutes of resting in the glass. A small splash of water is recommended to soften the alcohol and bring out even more fruit, chocolate and complexity without losing intensity.
