On the nose, you’ll find dark, sweet chocolate, treacle and caramel, alongside nutty notes of hazelnut and pecan, raspberry jam, dried apricots and a faint earthy edge that is very typical of Ben Nevis.
The palate is full-bodied and intense, delivering layers of raisins, dark syrup, chocolate, dried stone fruits and warming spice, with a subtle thread of smoke adding depth without ever taking over. The mouthfeel is distinctly oily and robust – it really feels like whisky drawn straight from the cask into the glass.
The finish is long, warming and sweetly spicy, with lingering sherry richness, dark chocolate, nuts and a gentle mineral note that recalls the rugged Highland landscape at the foot of Ben Nevis.
This is a whisky for those who enjoy big, sherry-matured styles at high strength, with plenty of personality – a perfect late-evening dram in a tulip glass, ideally with a few drops of water to tease out even more fruit, nuttiness and dark, brooding depth.
