Franca Contea Grappa Rovere is a barrel-aged grappa from Franciacorta in Lombardy, crafted from the pomace of Chardonnay (and other estate grapes) used for the winery’s sparkling wines. After distillation, the spirit is matured in oak casks, which lend it its intense golden colour and a rich, complex character.
The producer, Franca Contea, is a family-owned estate in the heart of Franciacorta. Their philosophy combines modern technology – gentle pressing and careful temperature control – with traditional vineyard and cellar work. The result is wines and distillates with a strong sense of place, balance and elegance.
Nose
The nose is expressive and aromatic, showing sweet liquorice, honey and light cocoa wrapped in fine, well-integrated oak. Notes of tobacco leaf, delicate spice and a floral touch reminiscent of dried flowers and herbal tea add complexity. With some time in the glass, additional layers of vanilla, almond and subtle dried fruit emerge.
Palate
On the palate, Grappa Rovere is smooth, round and velvety, with a warm yet well-balanced strength. It opens with honeyed sweetness, vanilla and soft oak, followed by flavours of cocoa, liquorice root, tobacco and gentle spice. The fruit profile suggests ripe yellow stone fruit – peach and apricot – along with yellow pear and a hint of citrus zest adding lift and freshness.
Finish
The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering vanilla, undergrowth, dried herbs and ripe fruit, supported by a pleasant warmth from the alcohol. A discreet oak spice gives structure and a slightly dry, elegant tail without bitterness.
Serving
Best served at around 16–18 °C in a small tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromas. Grappa Rovere is an excellent after-dinner spirit, pairing beautifully with dark chocolate, nut-based desserts or simply enjoyed on its own as a refined digestif.
