Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Among the members of Elements of Islay’s new “core range” we find a blended malt with the telling name Bourbon Cask. The fact that this whiskey is a blended malt means that several single malts from different distilleries are included. Unfortunately, we are only told that it is about two “iconic” distilleries, one on Islay’s south coast and one on the north coast. But if you are an experienced smoke diver, you might be able to taste which ones?
As the name suggests, Elements of Islay Bourbon Cask is aged exclusively in bourbon casks, both first-fill and refill. It is bottled at full-grown 54.5% alcohol, and neither added color nor cold-filtered.
Colour: Light golden.
Smell: Like sticking your nose into a glass of homemade vanilla sugar, naturally accompanied by a healthy Islay smoke, hints of tropical fruit and chimney soot.
Tasting notes: The taste is sweet and creamy, with plenty of peat smoke and notes of freshly baked brioche, good coffee, vanilla and buttercream.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy it plain. However, it can absorb a drop of water!
The Elements of Islay core trilogy includes three terms:
Cask Edit, Bourbon Cask and Sherry Cask.
Cask Edit is a composition – or editing – of refill, bourbon and sherry casks. Rich, smoky single malt from Islay’s south coast fuses with a fresher, fruitier style from the north. Bourbon Cask is matured in first fill and refill bourbon casks. Classic rich barbecue smoke from an Islay distillery on the south coast is combined with more subtle, fresh flavors from the north coast. Sherry Cask is matured in first fill and refill sherry butts and hogsheads. Islay single malt from a south coast distillery brings flavors of dried fruit and dark chocolate, while a north coast distillery contributes notes of lemon oil and Arbroath smokie.
The range also includes a number of single malt bottlings from across the Islay distilleries, as well as our now archived PEAT blend bottlings.
