Ardnamurchan Midgie is a playful and summery release from the Ardnamurchan Distillery – a whisky that balances light-hearted charm with serious depth. Its name is a cheeky tribute to Scotland’s infamous midgies – the tiny, persistent Highland midges that are as much a part of the landscape as mist and sea breeze.
Beneath the whimsical label lies a well-crafted and thoughtfully composed single malt. Made from a mix of peated and unpeated spirit – with a clear emphasis on the unpeated – and matured in a selection of bourbon casks, port barriques, and a touch of sherry wood, this whisky delivers a beautifully layered experience full of contrast and character.
The nose is lively and inviting, with aromas of caramelised pineapple, strawberry jam, and salted plums, underpinned by hints of smoked ham, almond, and a cooling touch of mint. On the palate, expect poached pear, meadow flowers, lemon-thyme, and cocoa, wrapped in soft peat smoke and charred cherry wood. The finish is long, dry and elegant, leaving behind a memory of sea salt, spice and red berries.
Ardnamurchan Midgie is much more than a seasonal curiosity – it’s a bold and charming dram that captures the essence of summer on the Scottish coast and the soul of one of the Highlands’ most forward-thinking distilleries.
