In the late 19th century, a special friendship was formed between two young men in the Danish West Indies: the future King Haakon VII of Norway and Valdemar Riise, son of the pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise. They first met in 1886, when the young Prince Carl sailed to the islands as a cadet in the Danish navy. During his two visits, he became a cherished guest in the Riise household, and the friendship between them lasted a lifetime.
