Plantation Black Cask 2018 Barbados & Fiji is a smooth, dark and fruit-driven rum in Plantation’s popular Black Cask series. This bottling is a blend of rums from Barbados and Fiji, with Barbados bringing round, creamy sweetness and Fiji adding a more spicy, full-bodied character.
The rum is aged according to Plantation’s classic double/triple ageing philosophy: first for 1–3 years in tropical climates in ex-bourbon casks in the countries of origin, then around one year in Cognac Ferrand casks in France, before the final blend is finished for roughly another half year in heavily charred new oak – hence the name Black Cask. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
Flavour profile
Appearance: Medium to deep golden amber.
Nose: Sweet notes of vanilla and toasted oak, candied fruit, caramel and a hint of coconut and orange peel.
Palate: Soft and rounded mouthfeel with flavours of caramelised sugar, tropical fruit, candied citrus, vanilla, light cocoa and gentle oak. A touch of spicy warmth from the Fiji component balances the sweeter Barbados rum.
Finish: Medium in length, with lingering vanilla, barrel notes, brown sugar and dried fruit.
Serving suggestions Plantation Black Cask 2018 is excellent neat or with a single ice cube if you want to tone down the sweetness slightly. It also works very well in dark rum cocktails where toasted oak, vanilla and candied fruit notes can shine, for example in a rum Old Fashioned or a simple highball with soda water.
