Two delicate blends from Barbados and Guyana—two countries with their own rum styles. Both produce rum on pot stills and column stills. The powerful, aromatic rums come from pot stills, while the gentler, rounder style is made on more modern column stills.
Dos Maderas 5+3 and 5+5 are born the same way. They are handcrafted and aged first in the Caribbean. The rum is then shipped to the Williams & Humbert bodega in Jerez, where it undergoes a regime similar to a solera. “Dos Maderas” is Spanish for “two woods,” a direct nod to the way it is matured.
The difference between 5+3 and 5+5 is the time in wood.
5+3 spends a total of 8 years: first 5 years in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks, then 3 years in Spain in ex Dos Cortados Oloroso sherry casks (very dry sherry). Hence 5+3—the name “Double Aged Rum.”
5+5 continues beyond the 5+3 with an additional 2 years in ex Don Guido Pedro Ximénez sherry casks (very sweet sherry), so 5+3+2 = 5+5—the name “Triple Aged.” This product is not labeled rum because the sugar content exceeds 20 g/L—it is classified as a spirit drink.
