The Boulet de Canon (“Cannonball”) series from Compagnie des Indes has reached its 13th edition. The rum is a blend of distillates from Nicaragua and Panama, which is “finished” in a cask that has contained smoked whiskey from the island of Islay. And as if that wasn’t enough, it is subsequently infused with smoked hay, which gives this rum a hugely interesting and complex character.<\/p>\n
It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration.<\/p>\n
Colour: Dark golden.
\nAroma: Exciting aroma of grilled meat, caramel, tobacco and ash.
\nTasting notes: Great power and plenty of smoke and peat, as well as notes of herbs (oregano, rosemary) and roasted malt.<\/p>\n

Compagnie des Indes is a so-called “independent bottler”. The company was started by the Frenchman Florent Beuchet, and draws inspiration from the British East India Company, which in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries imported rare and exotic goods from all over the world to Europe. In the same way, Florent finds casks from brokers and distilleries throughout the rum world \u2013 from Florida to Jamaica, Fiji and Indonesia \u2013 and bottles them under the Compagnie des Indes brand. Many are bottled as “single casks”, but CDI also publishes well-composed blends.<\/p>\n
For the past few years, the rest of Europe has turned enviously to Denmark when Florent serves the annual batch of exclusive, Danish single cask bottlings. These are always bottled at cask strength and without added color or sugar \u2013 something that makes the teeth of rum geeks around the world water! But you will also find sweeter and easy-drinking rums in the series of trans-Caribbean blends; e.g. Latino and Cara\u00efbes.
