Louis Roederer decided in 2021 to replace one of the house\u2019s most famous champagnes, \u201cBrut Premier\u201d, with the new \u201cCollection\u201d. The decisive motivation was a desire to raise the quality and individuality one more notch, thereby cementing the house\u2019s status as a supplier of one of the market\u2019s very best non-vintage champagnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cCollection 246\u201d refers to the fact that it is primarily based on the 2021 vintage, which is Louis Roederer\u2019s 246th vintage. The vintage contributes 55% of the wine, of which 30% underwent malolactic fermentation. \u201cReserve Wines aged in oak\u201d make up 10% (six different \u201cfoudre-aged\u201d vintages \u2013 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), and \u201cPerpetual Reserve\u201d accounts for 35%. \u201cPerpetual Reserve\u201d is a tank-aged wine established in 2012, and each year it is topped up with wine from the current vintage (2021 in the case of \u201c246\u201d) corresponding to the same volume that has been used that year. This highly unique and complex composition ensures that every release of \u201cCollection\u201d achieves a high degree of continuity in style and quality, while also adding even more richness and character. \u201cCollection\u201d is fermented and aged in bottle for a minimum of 3 years, and the dosage\u2014the sugar liqueur added at the end\u2014amounts to 7 g\/l.<\/p>\n
\u201cCollection 246\u201d is composed of 54% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and 11% Pinot Meunier from many different parcels, with one third located in each of Champagne\u2019s top districts: Vall\u00e9e de la Marne, Montagne de Reims, and C\u00f4te des Blancs. On the nose, the wine offers delicate aromas of ripe yellow fruits (mirabelle plums, plums, nectarines), complemented by a fresh touch of citrus and a discreet oak influence (24% is vinified in French foudres). The palate shows delicious, creamy nuances of exotic fruit\u2014peach in particular\u2014along with fine floral notes. Subtle hints of toasted bread emerge on the finish, which concludes with a fresh, lightly salty, mineral edge.
