Proudly bearing the family crest adorned with nine bamboo leaves<\/strong>, Nine Leaves Distillery<\/strong> was founded in 2013 by Yoshiharu Takeuchi<\/strong>. It is located in \u014ctsu<\/strong>, Shiga Prefecture<\/strong>, close to an underground spring renowned for the exceptional softness and purity of its water<\/strong> flowing from Mount Ishiyama<\/strong>\u2014a detail often cited as central to the distillery\u2019s identity and house style.<\/p>\n

Producer (brief):<\/strong> Nine Leaves was a Japanese micro-distillery celebrated for uncompromising craftsmanship and genuinely small-batch production. Takeuchi-san adopted a philosophy inspired by the whisky world\u2014prioritising precision, clear cask expression and the quality of raw materials (especially water) over volume. The distillery ceased production in 2023<\/strong>, which has only increased interest in the remaining releases.<\/p>\n

This small batch<\/strong> is built from the marriage of two 400-litre casks<\/strong> that previously held Pedro Xim\u00e9nez sherry<\/strong>. Chromatically, it shows a striking weave of deep copper tones with bright orange and yellow highlights. The aromatic and flavour profile is heady and sunlit, yet punctuated by fruity and infusion-like sequences that act as true wells of freshness.<\/p>\n

The nose is refined and deep: initially powdery notes of cocoa<\/strong> and freshly grated ginger<\/strong>, joined by apricot<\/strong> and a toasty hint of grilled bread<\/strong>, evoking radiant Andalusian warmth. With aeration, beeswax<\/strong>, oak<\/strong>, and a touch of varnish<\/strong> appear, reminiscent of a cabinetmaker\u2019s workshop. On the palate it is broad yet incisive: juicy orange<\/strong>, peach<\/strong> and nectarine<\/strong>, alongside expressive dried-fruit notes of fig<\/strong> and date<\/strong>. Then come noble spices\u2014cardamom<\/strong>, saffron<\/strong> and ginger<\/strong>\u2014woven delicately with Bourbon vanilla<\/strong> and a soft, creamy coconut milk<\/strong> nuance.<\/p>\n

The finish is plush and elegant, blending heady notes (cane flower), honeyed tones (lavender), herbaceous suggestions (Havana\/tobacco), gourmand elements (gingerbread), and bright fruit (kumquat). It gradually turns fresher through infusions of verbena<\/strong> and chamomile<\/strong>, before a fine layer of intertwined liquorice and vanilla<\/strong> adds extra smoothness to the mature, radiant after-aroma.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
