Quinta do Portal – Moscatel do Douro Colheita 2007 75 CL 18%

Douro Valley Port – Portugal

This is rare, well-aged and irresistible vintage moscatel in top quality.

By far the best clone, muscat blanc a petit grains, is used for this moscatel do douro, the sweet liqueur type made from grapes from the Douro region that is vinified and aged as a tawny port. Made from muscatel grapes, it is not technically port wine, but one senses the relationship, while moscatel’s grape-identical aromas give the wine an aromatic, fresh profile. The sweetness is analytically like other port wines, but due to the aromatic DNA of moscatel, it is still its own.

The grapes for the wine come from the highest fields (approx. 600 m.o.h.), where the green grape varieties dominate, as they around the cooler and wind-blown hilltops achieve the right acid content. 2007 was a top year for both vintage port as well as moscatel do douro with a long growing season and a nice tartaric acid level. This is perfectly captured in the Quinta do Portal Moscatel do Douro Reserva 2007, which with approx. 10 years of oxidative storage in 550-650 liter barrels has achieved the perfect balance between storage aromas and fruit identity.

The color is in the direction of old cognac, so there is something nice to look at while drinking it. Aroma and taste are an inexplicably successful marriage of moscatel’s grape-fresh, flowery, effervescent aromas and, on the other hand, the oxidative elements of a decade of storage in oak barrels. The significant evaporation during storage has contributed to the great intensity of the wine. De ca. 110 grams of residual sugar / liter is finely balanced by the wine’s acid, so that it floats weightlessly through the sensory system, which in turn is bombarded by complex aromas.

Enjoy the wine in a white wine glass, at 8-12 ° for desserts with pickled citrus fruit / peel and / or hints of caramel. In practice, it could be an almond pie, cream caramel with pickled, caramelized citrus fillets, caneles or bread & butter pudding; the possibilities are many. Finally, it is approved as a cozy wine. If you are spartan, it can be stated that the wine stays fresh for several weeks after opening, longest in the fridge.
