Geyerhof is not alone behind some of Austria’s best dry white wines; they now also make one of the most interesting sparkling.

This new project, 360 ° Pet Nat, is unsulphured pétillant natural, which Ilse Maier’s son, Josef, has sponsored. For this wine, he has selected some of Geyerhof’s best green veltliner grapes (from mainly Gaisberg), picked at optimal maturity.

Unlike champagnes and other sparkling wines on the champagne method, pet-night is made from physiologically ripe grapes that give a radically different and more welcoming expression than the champagne types. If you have a hard time learning to love champagne etc., give pet night a try.

Pétillant naturel is actually an ancient production method where the fermented wine is poured into champagne bottles that are closed while there is still unfermented sugar left in the actively fermenting wine. Therefore, neither yeast nor sugar is added, and the wine therefore ferments very slowly until once in spring / summer after harvest. In 2017, Pet-Nat is 360 ° fermented dry and then hand-disgorged to remove the largest lumps of dead yeast and tartar.

Aroma and taste possess the essence of green veltliner with its white pepper, cider apples, stone fruit, parsley stalks, apple blossom and salty minerals.

Soft bubbles and mature fullness without shrinking acid make it a pleasure to drink 360 ° Pet Nat in large sips – with about as much drinkability as Asturias’ best ciders. Aromatically, they are definitely not opposites either.

Handmade wines in microscopic editions are never cheap, but this one is priced like beginner champagne. Then we know well what we would like to drink.
