Finca Antigua Reserva – 2012 75 CL

D.O. Reserva La Mancha – Spain

Beautiful strong deep and cherry red in the glass. When the nose meets the glass, it meets with an intense aroma of wild berries, fallen leaves and balsamic vinegar with small hints of mint, thyme and eucalyptus – and a bit of vanilla. The aging in French oak barrels leaves its pleasant traces with hints of tobacco, spices, junipers and anise – all of which make the wine a truly elegant and complex experience. With such a powerful entrance, the mouthfeel must of course be able to catch up. And it can. Fat body and spine, soft, full-bodied and comfortable. Ideal as an accompaniment to hearty dishes.

The latest venture from the acclaimed house Martinez Bujanda is called Finca Antiqua. When they chose to launch this project, they set out to find the most suitable vineyards to be able to produce a wine that could mark itself among the best in the world in terms of price versus quality. After a long search, which brought them around to most parts of Spain, they found 283 ha. planted vineyards in the provinces of Cuenca and Toledo. The fields are planted with 115 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 88.5 hectares of Tempranillo, 55 hectares of Merlot and 24.5 hectares of Syrah and are located at an altitude of 840-880 meters above sea level. The climate in the regions is blessed with cold nights and warm sunny days in late August and early September, which contributes to the grapes undergoing a longer ripening period. Once the grapes are harvested, they are driven to the brand new winery, where they are processed before being laid on casks of American and French oak. Finca Antigua is first harvested in October on the 25-hectare vineyard La Alfalfa. Subsequently, the grapes are stalked before fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks over a period of 16 days, during which the cap of grape skins is continuously pressed into the must. Subsequently, the wine is placed in French oak barrels for 24 months before being clarified and bottled.
