About the Product
The world’s first Reposado Rare. This limited and exclusive release contains tequila that has been aged for a full 6 years and 4 months in so-called Pipón casks of American oak. Normally, the long aging would qualify the tequila for the highly regarded category of Extra Añejo, which is used for tequila aged more than 3 years. But according to Mexican law, you may not call a tequila Añejo and Extra Añejo if it has been stored in barrels with a capacity of more than 600 liters. Pipón casks have a capacity of 24,000 litres, and are thus far above the maximum limit.

The distillery has therefore instead used the term Reposado Rare for this exceptional tequila, of which only a very small number has reached this country. The reason for choosing the large Pipón casks is that it allows a completely different flavor profile than what you normally get with long-term aged tequila: a normal extra añejo would, after 6 years of aging, have very little of its natural agave flavor left, whereas the oak notes from the cask would be very dominant. As I said, this Reposado Rare has been aged in a much larger barrel, and thus there has been much less contact with the oak in the cask. This has resulted in it – despite its long storage time – still retaining much of its agave flavour. This results in a tequila that is extremely nuanced and which is neither dominated by agave nor barrel.

El Tequileño Reposado Rare is released at an ABV of 40% and is made from 100% blue agave from the highlands of Jalisco.

About El Tequileno
Tequileño is one of the most highly respected and popular premium tequila brands in the world. And not without reason – the distillery was founded in 1959 by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in the city of Tequila, Mexico. The distillery took its name from the town – a name that is not entirely accidental. Because the town of Tequila is the place where the agave-based spirit was first distilled, and it is also where the drink gets its name.

In addition to this historical heritage, Tequileño is also special in that it is one of the very few tequila distilleries that releases its tequila under its own name. Normally in the tequila industry, the distilleries sell their tequila to independent bottlers, who then sell it under their own name. Tequileño handles the entire process himself – from planting and harvesting the blue agave, to mixing and bottling the final tequila drink.

Tequileño today publishes a number of different tequilas: Under the 1959 premium line you will find classics such as blanco, reposado, cristalino and añejo; and for those who want a more economical and drinks-focused alternative, you will find a blanco and reposado.
