Percheron – Old Vine Cinsault 75 CL

Wester Cape – South Africa

Fantastic Cinsault made on 65-year-old vines! Fresh, seductive and incredibly vibrant scent of sweet cherries and sensations of earthy undertones. The wine has an almost floating lightness in the mouth, where a vibrating acidity and low tannins result in a long and beautiful cherry-like aftertaste. Enjoy it slightly chilled.

Boutinot is an international wine company that works with more than 150 wineries around the world. They also produce a large number of wines themselves in close collaboration with winemakers in France, Italy and South Africa. It is from the latter country that Percheron is being produced. The grapes are picked from more than 80-year-old vines in the trendy Swartland. Name and etiquette are a tribute to the large heavy workhorse of the Percheron breed, which was used in the vineyards before the advent of the tractors. Percheron is a wine that the English wine journalist Jancis Robertson has listed among his “best value wines”. She adds that the wine delivers far more than what one can expect from the price (massive over delivery for the price). This has led to high demand for wine in England and therefore we are only allocated very limited quantities. Percheron’s winemaker Marinda Kruger-van Eck has a penchant for noble grape varieties with a long history in South Africa. Among these is Cinsault, a personal favorite that has been overlooked for years. Her passion meant a lengthy search until she found some 65-year-old bush-shaped vines on Cinsault – a nationally treasured treasure! The old vines are planted in the warm Swartland close to the coast. Fortunately, the cool winds from the Atlantic Ocean have a cool effect, which means that Percheron Cinsault is never “boiled” or jam-like. The very old vines also ensure a naturally low yield. Something that is especially essential for Cinsault to produce interesting and characterful wines. It concentrates the fresh and vibrant red cherry aromas, as well as focuses the flavors in the grapes. All grapes are hand-picked and irrigated. The aging vines, and the more than reasonable price, make the wine an unusually good buy.
