OMAR means “amber” in Gaelic, and the name reflects the elegant amber color of our single malt whisky. The place where Nantou Distillery is located has a pleasant climate and source of clean and unpolluted water, which is suitable for whiskey production and maturation. That’s why we built the distillery here. The whiskey is non-chill filtered and bottled without added caramel.

Colour: Bright Golden Honey
Aroma: bold and powerful, with a significant woody influence, an unusual element for Asian single malts. There’s a modest grain component here, but notes of thick almond nougat and brown sugar temper it considerably
Palate: equally intense and aggressive with a distinctive dark chocolate note, along with a bold baking spice and gingerbread character kicking in soon after.
Finish: Some rustic, slightly ragged granary notes linger in the back, but there is so much flavor packed into the body that a bit of green is forgivable in the finish. All in all, it’s an experience that many single malt drinkers will find familiar – but just spun in such a way that it’s unequivocally unique.
Nantou is Taiwan’s second largest province and in Nantouhsie is the distillery that actually makes wine and is called Nantou Winery.
In 2008 spirits began to be distilled into whiskey. At first, they let a nearby brewery take care of the entire process until the mash was ready to be distilled. But in 2010 they installed German mash barrels and washbacks to be able to make their own mash.
The size of the washbacks is 15,000 liters and the fermentation takes 60-72 hours and only malted barley is used.
The owner is TTL (Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation), which is owned by the state and emerged from the monopoly that ended in 2002.
